The concept of life and death

Life is a series of commitments and goals that goes on for a finite amount of time.  A commitment is something that you put your focus and your efforts into; a goal is something that you aim to achieve before your time in this world comes to an end.  Death is the end of your commitments and projects all together; death is not something that you strive for at all.  Having a finite amount as an inhabitant on this earth does not make life meaningless because we have successors that will become inhabitants of this earth and accomplish the projects we could not accomplish during the short span of our existence and maybe accomplish even more than we have before our death. If life never ended, then it would be meaningless because your commitments and goals would keep going for an infinite amount of time and the things you commit to and strive to achieve become no longer enjoyable after a certain period of time. Having a finite time on this earth can be a valuable thing because that also alleviates one of the most important human emotions besides love, which is desire.  Desire is an important human feeling because it drives humans to innovate as well as driving humans to do evil things, so shortening and ending human life can be a valuable thing, even though it is not good or bad.  Having a finite amount of time on this earth makes our accomplishments meaningful and worthwhile because if humans were immortal, we would not want to work hard to achieve our goals since being immortal means that you can live forever and have endless opportunities to experience and achieve the things that we want from life.

    I agree with your argument that life would be meaningless in a world where we are all immortal. Our mindsets would be very different and life in general would be as well. Another factor to keep in mind is that it would be impossible for everyone to be immortal because there just isn't enough room for everyone on earth. Even the idea of everyone being immortal seems a bit far fetch and unreasonable since space is limited. Everything in life comes with limits, boundaries. This keeps us grounded. The world would not make sense if we had endless anything; the world would go mad.

Pros and Cons of Immortality

Immortality is ability to live forever. People who are immoral will never have to experience death because they have an eternal life. Thinking this, some people might think that is something they want because we will have an unlimited amount of time. We won't have to worry about death because it will never come. However, being immortal isn't as good as we make it out to be.  When making decisions, there are consequences in the decisions we make because we are picking one path and letting go of the other. confusing souls for personality

When talking about death it is not uncommon to mention souls and believing in souls. In A Dialogue on Personal Identity and Immortality written by John Perry, the characters Gretchen Weirob and Sam Miller are in debate relating to the proof of personal identity and sameness of soul. Weirob states her opinion that there is no personal identity for the reason that there is no proof stating we hold one soul. Miller disagrees saying that there is no proof of human bodies holding multiple souls. I agree with Miller and his argument from the first chapter of the book. There are ways to identify people and objects by characteristics. Without the characteristics then how can someone identify a person or object with no visual aid? Agreeing with Miller, the idea of having one soul in our body for our entire life is engraved in our minds. Having Weirob question that idea leaves me with more questions.
