Pros and Cons of Immortality
Immortality is ability to live forever. People who are immoral will never have to experience death because they have an eternal life. Thinking this, some people might think that is something they want because we will have an unlimited amount of time. We won't have to worry about death because it will never come. However, being immortal isn't as good as we make it out to be.
When making decisions, there are consequences in the decisions we make because we are picking one path and letting go of the other. You won’t get to experience the other path because you chose not to follow it and it messes with the one you did. With immortality, Immortals won’t have to make difficult decisions in their life because they are aware that they have an unlimited amount of time. People who are immortal can pick to do one thing and have the time to also achieve the other because they will live forever. The problem with this is that there is no significance people who are immortal have the ability to do any possible thing they want to in their unlimited amount of time. This can lead to boredom. You run out of things to do that you are interested and the pretty soon, you have nothing to look forward too. This can lead to life having no meaning. So we need to have a limited amount of time because it affects how we structure our life.
This is a good post, it gives the people who read it a taste of what immortality would be like by comparing it to a mortal life. This is not a argument nor a reference to a class discussion (you did not mention it), it still is able to stand on it's own. There were two sentences that didn't really make sense to me, it seems like it wasn't reviewed thoroughly before posting it. Good choice of topic though, next time try to signify which is the pro and con between the topics you choose.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with the cons of immortality that you provided. I believe there would be more cons than pros in a topic like immortality. You did point out the main issue of immortality, which was that life will eventually have no meaning. Someone who experiences immortality will begin to realize that their own life has no meaning. But, there are a few pros, it'd be interesting if you also compared the pros and cons.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your cons of immortality although, I feel as if there are still consequences to the decisions they make throughout there life. In addition, I feel as if they would never get bored since the world around us changes just as fast as we do. Meaning that they could live through different eras of time. You do bring up a good point that immortality does affect our structure of life because we do not so much base our life around what we have to do before we die. Although it is more as a timeline of how our life will progress.
ReplyDeleteI like this idea of opportunity cost. However, I would object that the human mind is inclined to only so much boredom, unless subjected to extreme lack of stimulus. If there is a prevailing perception of old people as bored, it is probably because nursing homes and creaky joints are prohibitive, not because life gets more boring the more you live.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with your cons. Living for so long can most definitely lead to boredom. No one wants to live a life of boredom, especially if that is forever. Yes, although we get an unlimited amount of time to achieve all your dreams and goals, it's not ideal because you can lose interest. I agree that you give up your path of mortality by choosing another of immortality. Which one is better and all in all worth it? The structure of our life is important when living with mortality.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your whole post. It is important for us to understand the lack of time we have to live. Understanding how short our life is creates critical thinking for decisions. In a way, the knowledge has us take our life more seriously. We know that our actions have consequences and every action we make affects our life in some way. Immortals would not take life seriously since they know they have endless time to do whatever they want. While, mortals have hard decisions to make and ask serious questions for serious answers.
ReplyDeleteThe greatest point here is how our mortality helps us structure our life. With limited time, we are in a state of urgency to accomplish something that has meaning to us. If we would live forever, we would do all the things we would normally abandon in a single mortal life, therefore leading to insignificance. You make a great argument about running out of things to do when one is immortal. I concur with your take on immortality and its pros and cons. It is well explained and makes lots of sense. Capable of convincing a person who wants to live an infinite amount of years.
