Is our soul really mortal?

Lucretius is a great Philosopher who writes about death. He says that our body and soul die together, meaning that our soul really is mortal. How could our soul live on without our body if they are connected?

Lucretius tells us that our body, mind, and soul all enter this Earth to live a life, and when it is time, die. While the mind and soul are one, it is mortal while on Earth. Our soul is always with us through night and day. We eat, sleep and breathe with our body and soul.

Once our vessel of a body decides it is time to leave Earth, it deteriorates and dies. Our soul moves along with our dead body because it doesn't have a solid shelter anymore. Our body needs a solid foundation to call home, but once that is over and done with, it's gone. Our soul only has one chance to live, so it won't somehow connect with a body in the afterlife because there is only one you. No other person in the afterlife will be you or have the same memories as you. Duplication is not an option this time. We only have one psychological profile.

An objection to his whole soul being mortal stance, how do we know if he is right. How do we know that our soul dies when we die. Our soul really could live on in "some other body" in the afterlife. Don't we always say that Heaven and dying is a better place to be, than down here suffering? So if that better place is after we die, shouldn't our soul live on to live that better life? I'm not really sure what to believe since both sides could be argued equally. We could die, body and soul together, or our body could die, while the soul lives on. This could be a mystery only to be found out when we actually die. Which side is actually right? One only wishes to find out the actual truth of death.

  1. I like the fact that you included both Gretchen and Lucretius arguments and represented their points well l. I just wished that you expounded on the other side that believed in a soul instead of just mentioning heaven briefly . This post is open minded and I like that, it just that you have to convince the reader to see your viewpoint; of being ambivalent about the state of souls . You can add Sam’s arguments or even bring other philosophy works who argue that the soul exists to bolster your argument/
