The Soul may be Immortal
The soul can be independent of the body because it acts independently when engaging in pure thought. Our conscious mental states are very different from our physical mental states. We as humans have sensations, thoughts, feelings, desires, beliefs, purposes, etc. Those come from our conscious mental state of mind. These are different from our physical state. For example, being able to measure or locate things physically, such as a doctor using his common sense to locate or measure something in the body. We can’t do that in a conscious state. We can’t, in the same way, measure out our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, hopes, so on.
Physical states, you can only have physical properties like location, size, shape, weight, so on. For mental states you feel things such as pain, the taste of things, so on and so on. Our mental states are about things, we’re able to think in depth because of our mental state. For example, a fear of spiders, a desire for food, a thought about your grade. But, our physical states seem to be nothing but what you actually see. Kind of like stating the facts of what you witness. For example, the balloon goes into the air when you release it from your hands. Mental states have different extraordinary states. You know what pain feels like because of your mental state, you know what things tastes like (knowing your likes and dislikes) because of your mental state. physical entities have properties like height, weight, shape, motion, so on and so on. Therefore, our soul versus our bodies must be different at least in these thoughts.

I agree with what you are saying here. I like how you drew a contrast between our physical mental state and our conscious mental state. I think those are two different things like you pointed out. Our souls do not need our physical brain to be able to function, so when our brain does rot we can still think. We can also process things and remember. The soul does not have to be connected to the body as you say above because the body is a material thing and the soul is immaterial.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the point you are trying to make in your argument about the differences between the physical mental state and the non physical mental state. These are two very different things that affect us in many different ways. Though I see the likening you are making between the non physical mental state and the soul, I didn't see how any of your post talked about the mortality or immortality of the soul. Maybe you could try to use the example of the contrasts between the non physical and physical states of mind to segway your argument into what you intended to focus the majority of your post about.
