Immortality isn’t what it’s cracked up to be
At first glance, immortality seems great. You would have all the time in the world to do whatever you want, you would be able to see how the world grows and changes throughout the years, and, of course, you would never need to worry about how and/or when you will die. However, when more thought is put into this, immortality doesn’t seem as desirable as before. Once you do everything, what else is there to do? Do it all again? A third time? Things would start to become repetitive sooner or later. Once you’ve done all you wanted to do, you’re trapped in a kind of eternal state of boredom with no means of escape. It would start to literally drive you to insanity. If you were to obtain immortality, you would need to go through way too much grief that a human should have to. The connections you make with others would come and go so frequently. There would come a time that you wouldn’t be able to go through anymore heartache. Finally, death is what gives our entire lives meaning. If you take death away, what is life? Our job is to make the most out of our time here on this earth, but if we have all the time in the world, what’s the point in doing anything at all? Life wouldn’t mean anything if there was no end to it. Altogether, immortality might seem great, but one must think of the implications.
I feel as though you've really grasped the concept discussed in "The Makropoulos Secret" about the downfalls of having immortality. I agree with your premise that death is the main thing that gives our lives meaning, but what if you were to be the only one who was immortal? Do you think the idea of immortality would be more appealing to people if they were the only person that could never die? The idea of everyone being internal is a miserable thought when one really thinks about the ramifications of it, but the idea of only yourself being immortal could be an interesting topic to contemplate.
ReplyDeleteI feel like being immortal would not be all that bad. Especially if you were the only one that was granted immortality then the world would be constantly changing around you. Yes, it would be harder to love things but the immortal person would just have to change his way of thought and know that he is only going to love this thing for a certain amount of time before it dies. Similar to humans now and our pets. Dogs do not live as long as us humans yet we still buy them and love them and then when they die we are sad but after a year or two we buy another one and love that pet just as much as the last one. Being immortal puts you in a higher pedestal than everyone else. I do not think they should think as the other humans as animals but they would just have to know that the love will not be forever. The world would be constantly changing around this immortal person too so he could live in all parts of the world and try different things see new technology and learn and study whatever he wanted. Yes after a very long time, he would run out of things to do since immortality is forever but according to scientists the earth will not last forever so eventually they are going to have to travel to another planet and live there. Wash and repeat that way of life.
