Should We Fear Death?


Death is something that is feared by many people, cross-culturally and multi-denominationally; the moment when we pass on into death is feared, and some people even fear what will become of them when they die. Many question the possibility of an afterlife. Is an afterlife real? Should we fear death? The stance that I take on this topic is that there is no reason why humans should fear death because we have been given no scientific proof of an afterlife, and because we, as humans, should not place the responsibility upon ourselves to try to prove something given that we have negative evidence to go off and no known way to prove the existence of an afterlife. If there were a way for us to try to prove the existence of an afterlife, we could pursue it, but we have not yet reached this scientific level. On the other hand, fear is something that affects us presently, it is an emotion that can be debilitating: Fear prevents us from focusing on the present moment in our lives and from living our lives to the fullest capacity. Every human should be able to rely on his or her own mind to know what is real and what is not real. This is not to say that people of faith are doing it wrong. Everyone is entitled to believe as they wish or to rely on science for answers, but whatever we do believe in should help us to eliminate the fear that we have of death. One reason for why people fear death is because they might have not lived in accordance with what they know to be a right way to live, so they think they will go to a bad place when they die. Another is because humans fear what they do not know. Whatever you choose to believe or to know, that is your reality because perspective shapes our reality.

    Although death may be traumatic, fearing death does not make sense because we as humans are put into this world by a higher god knowing that we are supposed to die. So with that being said death is and should be nothing to be scared of. I believe the main reason we as humans are scared of death is because even we know we are going to die, we never know when.

Pros and Cons of Immortality

Immortality is ability to live forever. People who are immoral will never have to experience death because they have an eternal life. Thinking this, some people might think that is something they want because we will have an unlimited amount of time. We won't have to worry about death because it will never come. However, being immortal isn't as good as we make it out to be.  When making decisions, there are consequences in the decisions we make because we are picking one path and letting go of the other. confusing souls for personality

When talking about death it is not uncommon to mention souls and believing in souls. In A Dialogue on Personal Identity and Immortality written by John Perry, the characters Gretchen Weirob and Sam Miller are in debate relating to the proof of personal identity and sameness of soul. Weirob states her opinion that there is no personal identity for the reason that there is no proof stating we hold one soul. Miller disagrees saying that there is no proof of human bodies holding multiple souls. I agree with Miller and his argument from the first chapter of the book. There are ways to identify people and objects by characteristics. Without the characteristics then how can someone identify a person or object with no visual aid? Agreeing with Miller, the idea of having one soul in our body for our entire life is engraved in our minds. Having Weirob question that idea leaves me with more questions.
